Implants

Implants

An implant is a titanium post that is placed in the patient’s bone and can be used to replace missing teeth or to anchor a denture or partial denture.  A crown can permanently attach to an implant to restore a single missing tooth.  A bridge can permanently attach to multiple implants to replace multiple missing teeth.  A denture or partial denture can attach to an implant to help stabilize and decrease movement of the denture.  The denture can snap on and off of the implant so that it can be removed and cleaned easily.

An oral surgeon or periodontist performs the placement of an implant or implants.  A small incision is made in the gums to expose the bone.  A small hole is made in the bone and the implant or titanium post is placed inside.  If there is not enough bone to support the implant, a bone graft is sometimes needed.  After a healing period, the crown, bridge, or denture is attached to the implant and the procedure is then complete.
