A bridge is one method of replacing missing teeth.  A bridge attaches to the teeth on both sides of a space where a tooth or teeth are missing.  There are certain requirements in order to be a candidate for a bridge.  The teeth on either side of the space must be in good condition and strong enough to support a bridge.

The space in between the teeth cannot be too great.  Usually, a bridge can only replace one or two missing teeth.  A dental drill is used to remove a small amount of tooth structure off the top and sides of the teeth that the bridge will attach to. This is very similar to the manner in which a tooth is prepared for a crown.  An impression is then taken and used to make a stone model that is an exact duplicate of the teeth in the patient’s mouth.

The laboratory then fabricates the bridge in a manner that makes it look like there is no missing tooth.  The bridge is then cemented or glued permanently in the patient’s mouth.  A bridge does not come in and out of the patient’s mouth.
